Top 10 Most Bizarre Foreign Bodies
Hey there! It's ******.
How does a foreign body get through the lower intestine?
...With a passport! Ha. Puns.
For those of you who don't know, a foreign body is any extraneous object that enters a place where it shouldn't be. For pets who visit the ER, a foreign body is typically swallowed, therefore in the digestive tract. Often, I've seen vets treat a foreign body in one of three ways:
1. Advise the owners to monitor their pet at home and see if it passes naturally.
2. Induce vomiting.
3. Foreign body surgery.
Each method is always at the vet's discretion and depends upon the nature of the foreign body. They come in all forms A-Z, 1-2-3 and your fur babies are not above their curiosity to ingest them.
Without further ado, here are the top 10 most bizarre foreign bodies we've encountered at the ER vet.
#10 Furniture
Jeremy the Pit bull cost his owners a $3500 foreign body surgery because he just couldn't resist the tasty couch stuffing that would later intertwine in his intestines. Yum Yum!
#9 Corn Cob
Every once in a blue moon some bozo fluffy-do will eat a corn on the cob whole versus attempting some nibbles. If you actually try the cob itself, it's really quite sweet. But don't swallow it though (Duh).
#8 Dental Floss
Do vets a solid and NEVER PULL ON THE FLOSS IF IT COMES OUT THE OTHER END. You risk slicing up your pet's insides. Thanks!
#7 Skewers
It was all so tasty, why wouldn't the skewer be too? #puppylogic
#6 Bowties, Socks and Panties
Burt the Golden Retriever came in three times in two months for swallowing socks. The one bow tie belonged to the puppy itself and he was able to throw it back up. The panties came back up as well. The woman did not want them back.
#5 Condoms and Tampons
I don't know what is more disturbing: The fact that the condom was swallowed or the fact that it was used. Same for the tampons.
#4 Razor Blades
Other than the fact that it was shiny, I don't see the appeal.
#3 Nails
No, not finger nails but the good old fashioned nails you hammer into the wall.
#2 Starfish
40 pieces of decorative starfish down the hatch in one setting. Perhaps, starfish are really scrumptious and I just don't know it.
#1 Golf Balls
This will always be the most jarring to me... Benny the Beagle was able to scarf down an entire bucket's worth of golf balls. Why? Just...Why?
As a reminder, if your pet does happen to encounter a foreign body, please seek veterinary help immediately. It's only a matter time before they find something else to swallow...
